She's a toddler more than a baby now, really.<br />

And I'm not really okay with that.<br />
<br />
But I digress.<br />
<br />
We had a pool party at Mills Park, with their awesome, renovated-this-summer pool. It was the last weekend it was open for pool parties, and it was a wonderfully mild day. Overcast, with a chance of rain that held off. Upper 80s, warm enough for swimming to be fun, but not so hot as to make being outside miserable for those who opted not to swim.<br />
<br />
It was a Hello Kitty party, so I put Saoirse in the Hello Kitty swimsuit I bought her before we went to San Diego.<br />

At first, she was a little confused about what to do with the cupcake. And definitely curious about that fire stick on top of it. We'd fed her little bits of cake during the cake pop practice so once we got some of it in her mouth, she realized what exactly this thing was and was up for it. She never did do the whole cake smash thing quite as much as many babies do. She ended up with an ear infection just days before her birthday, so she wasn't feeling her best, but 4 days of antibiotics had helped quite a bit.<br />

My sweet baby is getting bigger and bigger all the time. She has 4 teeth now (3 were through on her birthday, with a 4th just visible in the gum line). She loves food, but she also still loves breastfeeding. She's gotten confident in her crawling skills and will now track you down into the kitchen from the living room, probably a good 20 feet or so all told. She doesn't do a typical crawl, it's more of a crab walk or a gorilla walk or something. We have hardwood floors, so I don't entirely blame her for not wanting her knees on it.<br />

She cruises and has started working on getting down off of things. She does okay with assistance on that front, and will walk around the house while holding on to someone's fingers, although being carried offers a great vantage point and ease of access to places otherwise blocked by doors.<br />

She shows us how very not child-proofed our living situation is. She will fight you for some grapes and cherries. Bananas can also result in fingers in your mouth to retrieve the food she wants. That Cookie Monster toy was picked out for her specially by her Papa. It's a favorite toy now. She grabs it and hugs it tight, and it is the cutest thing.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">You can barely see it, but Saoirse had her own rainbow for her birthday.<br /></td></tr>

She's about 21 and a half lbs now, according to her appointment just before she was one. Due to the ear infection, her 1 year old check up had to be postponed. I wasn't about to give her shots when she wasn't feeling her best.<br />
<br />
I can't believe it's been more than a year now since I went through the life-altering experience of giving birth, mostly naturally, and becoming a mother. It has made such a change in my life, and Saoirse is just so...Saoirse. She's bubbly, and happy, and snuggly, and loving, and just has such a love for life and it's offerings. She helps me see all the wonder in the world and in just chilling out with the people you care about. Giving birth to her both showed me how strong I can be, and just how vulnerable we are as humans. I live my life both so incredibly thrilled to have her and innately terrified of forces outside my control. It's a strange balance. But you learn to embrace the wonder and push out the fear, because you can't live life scared of what could happen. You miss out on so much when you do that. Being a parent is really wearing your heart on your sleeve, sending a chunk of your soul out into the world where it will do what it will. I love her so much, it's just crazy.<br />
<br />

But what was the best way to do this economically? Individual tickets are pricey (thank goodness for Saoirse being little). I think SeaWorld ran around $60-80 per person, with the Zoo being in the same area. I get what these tickets costs go to, but geez, that's a lot. I looked into the San Diego city pass and ultimately decided it wasn't the best fit for us. I finally settled on the 3-4-1 pass, which is a pass that gets you in the Zoo, the Safari Park, and SeaWorld on one ticket. It cost about $150 per adult for a week long pass, which meant for a week (ours ended up being Wednesday-Tuesday), we could go to those 3 places as many times as we wanted. We only went to each place once, but it was still a savings. Also, at the Zoo, that pass gets you as many free rides as you want on the Skyfari Aerial tram, which is a great way to make it from the backside of the zoo back to the front where a lot of the food is. It's also just a great experience in general. We also invested in the souvenir cups at both the Zoo (we got the panda cup) and the Safari park (tiger cup). They cost $10, but you get free refills the entire rest of the day with a receipt. If you go back, you can get refills for $.0.99 not on the day you bought it. I think refills otherwise are like $1.49 a piece. It's a great way to stay hydrated. We basically filled it up every time we passed by a drink station. SeaWorld has a similar thing where if you buy a souvenir cup/water bottle you can get $0.99 refills. Not as good of a deal, but we were buying a bottle anyway. But I digress. The Zoo also had some movies going that I believe were included in the ticket price, but we didn't check them out. Saoirse isn't much for sitting through movies yet. </div><div><br></div><div>All of the profits from admission tickets to the Zoo and Safari Park go to conservation efforts made by the San Diego Zoological Society. They breed pandas, among other animals. I believe I saw an announcement of a new baby gorilla at the Park. So it's a great cause for that expensive ticket price to go to. If you live in the area, they have a pretty decent "season pass" I would suggest for people in certain zip codes. </div><div><br></div><div>The Safari Park has a brand new "Tiger Trail" that just opened May 24. We visited it on the 27th. They have 3 absolutely gorgeous Sumatran Tigers, the smallest of the tiger species. There's only about 400 of them left, as they have a very small native habitat (the island of Sumatra). The Trail is really pretty, the enclosures are nice, and there's a pretty area with a waterfall that is somewhat cooler due to being behind the falling water under an overhang. It's a nice resting spot. The Park also has an area where you can walk into an enclosure of Lemurs. There's nothing between you and them but a walkway rail. Sadly, it was hot and the lemurs weren't interested in moving the day I was there. But it's a really cool idea, and I definitely suggest you check it out. They also have a Lorikeet feeding enclosure. You can buy nectar to feed them and go in what is essentially a giant bird cage (with or without purchased nectar). We didn't do that (even though it was free without nectar), but it's interesting. </div><div><br></div><div>We were fortunate to not be affected in anyway by the wildfires that burned a lot of San Diego county just the week before we arrived, including not too far away from the Safari Park in Escondido. But the. Park wasn't damaged at all, and our vacation wasn't affected. Honestly, I never saw evidence that the fires happened except in news reports and our cab driver's comments. I just wasn't in the right areas I guess. </div><div><br></div><div>We used public transit for almost all of our traveling in San Diego. Joseph's aunt let us borrow her car to head up to Escondido and La Jolla, which was far more convenient than public transit, though doable. </div><div><br></div><div>Pictures to be added...</div>Monicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13670394248188915457noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19145174592592656.post-59319840773975876642014-06-05T04:33:00.001-07:002014-06-05T21:25:30.704-07:00San Diego FunMyI was pretty sure I posted another post, but apparently Blogger ate it. I'll deal with that later. <div><br></div><div>We had a great time in San Diego. We did many of the major tourist stops: San Diego Zoo, San Diego Safari Park, and SeaWorld. We also frequented Balboa Park, where we visited the Museum of Man, the Natural History Museum, and the United Nations Store and a group of places we called the "house ofs". I can't remember the full name, but there's a House of Ireland, House of China, House of Israel, and more. There happened to be an ethnic food festival there while we were there, so we went and checked that out. I'll go more in depth to what all we did as I go along. </div><div><br></div><div>Our first full day there, we ventured out with Joseph's aunt Sherrie. She took us grocery shopping, showed us around and bit, and took us to the sungrubbies.com show room, where we all got sun hats. Let me say, it was wonderful experience, and I definitely recommend sungrubbies.com. They were so kind and helpful. Beyond that, they gave Saoirse a "cool by the pool" book that we plan to read to her at some point. All of our hats are Sunday Afternoons brand. I really recommend them, as we all managed to pretty much avoid facial sunburns and back of the neck sunburns with these hats. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2mPxkyoVyOICBxx_CRYEwGYvdAvy4J1IA7IANx4XfDDaQZCxBZZ3UBrO89z8_rhst8SdwkTqEHa8HEqHlOonGp5YQgIyu3h035Cc3erybtjuhbd2rEBPO0hC6D6X1E6B4oVOGErhksg/s640/blogger-image--417901128.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2mPxkyoVyOICBxx_CRYEwGYvdAvy4J1IA7IANx4XfDDaQZCxBZZ3UBrO89z8_rhst8SdwkTqEHa8HEqHlOonGp5YQgIyu3h035Cc3erybtjuhbd2rEBPO0hC6D6X1E6B4oVOGErhksg/s640/blogger-image--417901128.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">And come on, if sun protection is this cute, why not be sun safe? The sunburns we did get were courtesy of bad clothing choices (read: putting the baby in short sleeves, thinking you wouldn't be outside <i>that much-</i>oops). </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I only have experience with the baby version of this hat, but the adjustable sizing (on the back of the head) means it will fit a wide variety of baby head sizes and the chin strap will snap loose with 10 lbs of pressure, so no worries about strangulation by neck strap (the bigger kids version has a toggle strap and less like a helmet as I understand). It comes in blue and pink. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGIidojFI82EnnbPDFwcfXw5u21DeR7_OijoYjBRLw_R7A4EhTUYvtAjqtjeCd_mhs9WI2rXPFP21AwxVz5HajLpTFzEZWi5REs4CHkIJsqhyH9il_GMl7q2ioh_iFattU6rNOQzdEEA/s640/blogger-image--1061878482.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGIidojFI82EnnbPDFwcfXw5u21DeR7_OijoYjBRLw_R7A4EhTUYvtAjqtjeCd_mhs9WI2rXPFP21AwxVz5HajLpTFzEZWi5REs4CHkIJsqhyH9il_GMl7q2ioh_iFattU6rNOQzdEEA/s640/blogger-image--1061878482.jpg"></a></div>You can see Joseph's hat choice in this picture; I took mine off for the picture. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I'm pretty sure it's this one (http://www.sungrubbies.com/product_index_html/product_detail_html/Cloudburst-RainSun-Hat.htm), the Cloudburst hat. I know his is good in rain as well. He tried on many, and ultimately settled on this one. If you can stop by a store, such as the sungrubbies.com showroom, and try on a variety of hats, I really suggest you do so. You never know what you might find that you like. We also bought the swim shirts we're wearing in this picture at sungrubbies. They did a wonderful job of keeping us from getting sun burned in and out of water. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7nMYGoaY56XBFb8DjPAOOgcFIPYwmX1qQVw_F6EkASM8VC6AOb51iX0hCftjD-9wtDs7-FWBcsJBblYp-sJhlB33krOJlTNC5ykPRGZCMEVG4up_nZLzjMnAfsBV7JQJuVDOMhHH4cQ/s640/blogger-image-1403899102.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7nMYGoaY56XBFb8DjPAOOgcFIPYwmX1qQVw_F6EkASM8VC6AOb51iX0hCftjD-9wtDs7-FWBcsJBblYp-sJhlB33krOJlTNC5ykPRGZCMEVG4up_nZLzjMnAfsBV7JQJuVDOMhHH4cQ/s640/blogger-image-1403899102.jpg"></a></div>My hat is seen here. It's the Sundancer Hat (http://www.sungrubbies.com/product_index_html/product_detail_html/Sundancer-UV-Protective-Hats.htm). I never got sunburned on my face in San Diego. That is 98% because of this hat. I burn so fast it's freakish, so this is a testament to its effectiveness. I even discovered I have a sun allergy while in San Diego, but that rash never occurred in the areas safely protected by my hat. Buying these hats was easily the best decision we made during our trip to San Diego. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">More San Diego experiences to come...</div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><i>Disclaimer: I was in no way compensated for posting my opinions here. Joseph (the husband) is a San Diego native so we came here to visit his aunt as well as have some fun. But here's a general pre-SD update. <div><br></div><div>Saoirse's first tooth broke through good on April 30, the day she turned 8 months old. She pulls up on my shirt and has figured out that that is where the boobs are and pulling down on my cami exposes them. She could roll over onto her stomach if she didn't hate being on her tummy. She figured out how to roll over from stomach to back at about 2 months old to avoid tummy time. We've been putting her on her tummy (she can get in a crawling position fine), but she screams the whole time. She hates it. I figure she'll either go straight to walking or be a butt-scooter. </div><div><br></div><div>That's the general update pre-SD. We had to stop and take a break after about a week and a half of solids because her booty didn't agree with the new food texture, and as such, how said food was exiting. Her hands are now right on target, if not quite as fast as she might like some days. She can sit up for extended periods quite stably, although she still has enough of a tendency to tump over that we don't put her straight on the hardwood or concrete floors without support and/cushion. Her feet are a constant play thing. While she's not rolling from back to tummy yet, she can spin around with her head as an axis. Se isn't a particularly large fan of tummy time, so her not rolling just yet doesn't particularly surprise me. She stands with minimal support for a couple seconds and for longer with a bit more. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">She's quite honestly the most amazing little being. But given the discomfort it caused me, I will not make my daughter (and any other children who follow her) hug, kiss, or receive such forms of affection if she doesn't want it. If she wants to be hugged or kissed, or do so (and the other person doesn't mind), I won't stop her. But if she doesn't, I'll teach her to give a handshake, high five, or Vulcan handsalute. Something to acknowledge the person's presence and their relationship and be respectful. As opposed to ignoring them, which is not respectful. But any physical touch will be on her terms. I won't teach her that she has to let anyone touch her to make them happy. That can lead to applying that tactic to non-family, non-benign situations. I can only figure it must be a comfort thing as their tummies try to figure out what this new substance is.</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_BJrAvIB5OIaIiW0NalylkRzOArWueKlFxYtOnHNymxd4hNqaEp_c_a8WhbKoc-wtn9ULbAmm935zjTncrmh0NbCuBU8qrllsZgFx4bf6YvIJF9PnPAXxIYzstB5iyXGVqjMivHSdOg/s640/blogger-image-1275119067.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_BJrAvIB5OIaIiW0NalylkRzOArWueKlFxYtOnHNymxd4hNqaEp_c_a8WhbKoc-wtn9ULbAmm935zjTncrmh0NbCuBU8qrllsZgFx4bf6YvIJF9PnPAXxIYzstB5iyXGVqjMivHSdOg/s640/blogger-image-1275119067.jpg"></a></div> (After eating the last of her avocado from Monday-accessories by her aunt Hong/Ana-Cherie)</div><div>3) I knew this was coming, but gone is the ease of EBF diapers. Her poop is now not just liquid, it has texture. Which I find somewhat odd seeing as her baby food is just a fuzz thicker than milk. But such is the experience. Not breastmilk, gripe water, or tylenol. Or simethicone. Yes, our bubble issues are great.<br />
<br />
She FINALLY got to have something on her spoon.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_HK4RAnYuBysULFmQGaUNlJzp8WbMJLcJ79HW6pIfhp5J1lTfGSWxXXmUOcy8xb_nKibZAhV62FB2MrePwTubpbhAoSDyI5nnLhzWVHllNcW9OAVlFF_gOq5GKgVmvWwuuq9346OfWw/s1600/1609886_10201631760017799_1119010632_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_HK4RAnYuBysULFmQGaUNlJzp8WbMJLcJ79HW6pIfhp5J1lTfGSWxXXmUOcy8xb_nKibZAhV62FB2MrePwTubpbhAoSDyI5nnLhzWVHllNcW9OAVlFF_gOq5GKgVmvWwuuq9346OfWw/s1600/1609886_10201631760017799_1119010632_n.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
She was pretty thrilled by that idea.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Full of good fats and other things that are great for a baby's developing little brain, we chose avocado as her first solid food. Mashed up and diluted with water to make it a consistency she's a bit more familiar with.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvygBbl3HrYzgb1o_HVgrNn_UYw2SEYDFezRJH3Eqj6Wp8IY7eHmUIfMcn2c-ucX4oI2iXaSTB5Ipe8DcFGyqM_ymhi1RmA9K5-rsNh1DXP0kEKgD7KrxeBJTkKpvfA1r_8T1vMEZZGw/s1600/1489212_10201631760137802_1577939709_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvygBbl3HrYzgb1o_HVgrNn_UYw2SEYDFezRJH3Eqj6Wp8IY7eHmUIfMcn2c-ucX4oI2iXaSTB5Ipe8DcFGyqM_ymhi1RmA9K5-rsNh1DXP0kEKgD7KrxeBJTkKpvfA1r_8T1vMEZZGw/s1600/1489212_10201631760137802_1577939709_n.jpg" height="300" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Her daddy fed her first, as I'm generally the person behind the food. This gave him a chance to be in the thick of it. Saoirse loves spoons. She loves to play with them and is pretty good at getting them in her mouth. So this was a new experience, there being something on the spoon. And she was totally digging.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAfPth60a3GW60yCrLOA9fmQsj_hAbyM2heQr2kYXFGiOcW7B2aQsefC78G39gwB_Bjg-NLYFxB-R29g7DOQMBxGTjHe8AmguJqqdBYzIVcXDUNqF-ZeCBRrCyO54mTw0wWHZbM3OePg/s1600/1900114_10201631762977873_978339613_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAfPth60a3GW60yCrLOA9fmQsj_hAbyM2heQr2kYXFGiOcW7B2aQsefC78G39gwB_Bjg-NLYFxB-R29g7DOQMBxGTjHe8AmguJqqdBYzIVcXDUNqF-ZeCBRrCyO54mTw0wWHZbM3OePg/s1600/1900114_10201631762977873_978339613_n.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
She was pretty thoroughly covered with it by the end. Her face and hands were green as she likes to grab the spoon. This picture was taken before everything was over. The bib was far more green by the time she was done, due to her method of attempting to suck the food off of the spoon. But she didn't do the fairly standard 'sputter-food-out' thing. That pretty spectacular tongue thrust reflex is long gone. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Afterward she took a shower with Cheerio. Which was a good idea since being hosed off was probably the easiest solution to the amount of baby guacamole between her fingers. And on her eyebrows. And her face in general. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We stopped when she seemed over it. Not really interested in the food coming at her (ie grabbing the spoon). The looks she gave us while eating were pretty close to "WHERE HAS THIS BEEN ALL MY LIFE?!?" I'm pretty certain she's convinced we've been holding out on her. After the shower though, she was all up for the boob. With a look sort of like "I haven't been cut off, have I?"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
No, baby girl, you haven't. You've got boob milk at your disposal for a while to come now. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I did give in and have cookie dough in my frozen yogurt on Friday. But other than that, we've been gluten free since Feb 13. It's not easy. I love bread. But I've had stomach issues my whole life (lactose intolerance and diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome since around age 11), and she's been having bad painful gas that has been known to wake her up screaming. So for the sake of both of us, we're trying this whole GF thing. <div><br></div><div>For the record, Vanilla Chex and Puffins Honey Rice cereals are really good. </div><div><br></div><div>It seems to have helped my stomach at least a bit and my trial run on Saoirse was somewhat thwarted by a minor virus that due to a slightly stuffy nose increased her bubbles. That was a rough couple of nights. </div><div><br></div><div>I found this recipe for GF tortillas on Pinterest (it is on my dairy and/or gluten free board) which turned out amazingly good. So yummy. I should make some more. </div><div><br></div><div>I plan on trying these later this evening. I'm going to have to somehow figure out how to substitute xantham gum for psyllium husk and some other thing for arrowroot flour, as I couldn't find either at Whole Foods. </span></div>Monicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13670394248188915457noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19145174592592656.post-71089642305089212812014-02-15T11:58:00.000-08:002014-02-15T18:30:40.478-08:001st Valentine's Day<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br><div>I took these yesterday in honor of Saoirse's first Valentine's Day. I'd been meaning to do a photo shoot for a while and, well, I had black sheets on my bed which made for an easy background. She's grown so much. She's almost 17 lbs, due to start solid foods at the beginning of March, when she's 6 months old. She still fits in many of her 3 mos outfits, but she's definitely moved more solidly into the 3-6 and 6 mos clothes area. </div><div><br></div><div>She loves picking things up and shoving them in her mouth. She tried to steal some of Ana-Cherie's French fries yesterday, but my mom caught her before she got them into her mouth. Which is good because French fries are definitely not what I planned for her first solid food (that'd be avocado). We still haven't had that first tooth break through, even though she's been teething for what seems like forever. </div><div><br></div><div>She loves to "fly" (us holding her up in the air), it gets the biggest grin out of her. She's also recently developed some consonants. She's saying something like "da da". She also likes to sputter, lots of slobber involved there. But it's cute. </div>Monicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13670394248188915457noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19145174592592656.post-61344543425668724832014-02-10T12:26:00.001-08:002014-02-10T15:35:30.940-08:00Pre-Shot Photo SequenceWe went and got the Pc and HiB shots today. I also hijacked their scale and weighed her with her clothes and diaper on. She's nearly 17 lbs there, so probably 16.5-16.75 without clothes and a diaper (we use cloth diapers so they're a bit more hefty). Anyway, while we were waiting for the nurses to come back with the shots I took this sequence of pics because Saoirse was in a happy, chatty mood. <div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu7cxJFhZup1XT57YzMZkMe6zfNUB79HpIphLZXgohyphenhyphen9DkBco7tO-r6Gb1XlPKtk67DtMHSDL9ImSEnK30DgLC1-DTy-94zbtA83POlqTa59Ur7k4X3jf6vENBL-wBHRSI6BlN4_PZow/s640/blogger-image-1353628867.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu7cxJFhZup1XT57YzMZkMe6zfNUB79HpIphLZXgohyphenhyphen9DkBco7tO-r6Gb1XlPKtk67DtMHSDL9ImSEnK30DgLC1-DTy-94zbtA83POlqTa59Ur7k4X3jf6vENBL-wBHRSI6BlN4_PZow/s640/blogger-image-1353628867.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">She loves her hands. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibaNWZ57ZIm2_Q2LGrvoJnOSs_u6zrQPWkl2vJJxjZEfaGE1N34vm07DI_UvgPVAwDwYw7ugiVCK1srtcyg7iToIJglZ-BlvHjmvRLF9OUAXYjJ3EYzUCtrYZjuBfR2IXm004z1EZiQg/s640/blogger-image--433155643.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibaNWZ57ZIm2_Q2LGrvoJnOSs_u6zrQPWkl2vJJxjZEfaGE1N34vm07DI_UvgPVAwDwYw7ugiVCK1srtcyg7iToIJglZ-BlvHjmvRLF9OUAXYjJ3EYzUCtrYZjuBfR2IXm004z1EZiQg/s640/blogger-image--433155643.jpg"></a></div>They're a great always-with-you toy/teething item. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1h9oIHCgLOSU6B3HToJYIx1CgOwjbsiiqMcClgnD2YUeHiNZ7b54mEHsJNmk_mKLY7FK9AXfE8imIdHWsWiV0LeX8jFHFwjKmnDDnA51RL1T6zyAPmkYsCShyphenhypheniRq_YF0HtHJPjSJlyA/s640/blogger-image-1676033182.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1h9oIHCgLOSU6B3HToJYIx1CgOwjbsiiqMcClgnD2YUeHiNZ7b54mEHsJNmk_mKLY7FK9AXfE8imIdHWsWiV0LeX8jFHFwjKmnDDnA51RL1T6zyAPmkYsCShyphenhypheniRq_YF0HtHJPjSJlyA/s640/blogger-image-1676033182.jpg"></a></div>Chatting up a storm </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG37wKyyEPzFAe_tJhyBxVnXwbpiHOjNPA8daY3cSBPLCG105koVSTHJX-ECUODAzdswQDtfzBubGH1feGk1HWCisM4RCvIaMaHhZDptSyoT6USmxZ1RtHjMHdmjfKuHgudtgUZPu10Q/s640/blogger-image--520774749.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG37wKyyEPzFAe_tJhyBxVnXwbpiHOjNPA8daY3cSBPLCG105koVSTHJX-ECUODAzdswQDtfzBubGH1feGk1HWCisM4RCvIaMaHhZDptSyoT6USmxZ1RtHjMHdmjfKuHgudtgUZPu10Q/s640/blogger-image--520774749.jpg"></a></div></div>Smiley girl. </div><div><br></div><div>She did pretty well with her shots. She was 16 lbs 1 oz on Monday, and she was 8 lbs 1.5 oz at birth. </div><div><br></div><div>She still fits in 3 mos clothes, but they're moving towards snug and the 6 months stuff is still a bit big but not swamping her. Her feet are still too small for a size 2 shoe by about an inch. She definitely hasn't turned out to be the ginormous baby we were half-expecting with my brother having been 9.5 lbs+ at birth (he was term, I was 2 weeks early), and her daddy being nearly 10 lbs at birth. My mom was guessing at least a 9 lb baby and that none of the newborn stuff would fit and that she would leave 0-3 months clothes quickly. She has been surprisingly average. A little higher than 50% in weight and a little lower in height (poor girl will probably end up short like her 5'3" mama). Once she was born, I was back to my pre-pregnancy weight (at least by the time I got home to a scale). </div><div><br></div><div>She's beautiful, smart, and would love to buy a consonant so she can join in the conversations around her. For now, she's working with the shrieks and periodic giggles available to her. And still loving her showers. She gets so excited when shower water runs. </div>Monicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13670394248188915457noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19145174592592656.post-66335211833213414332014-01-20T14:37:00.001-08:002014-01-20T14:37:15.716-08:00Car Seat Review: Safety 1st Elite 80 3-in-1<div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkv58VeJvfNXSwedsH8IqycSmNwLZrfTowmWqRCJLPfcd4ISQ_mM9M3IXh-b6KYpEFMP3A7n7x9HGNHChQNCU0D-IKGx5Wiva8-vgxtaF1K-s7PaoOLMtk0nCFJmvZJ4pnwTPm5g-wTQ/s640/blogger-image--1410794451.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkv58VeJvfNXSwedsH8IqycSmNwLZrfTowmWqRCJLPfcd4ISQ_mM9M3IXh-b6KYpEFMP3A7n7x9HGNHChQNCU0D-IKGx5Wiva8-vgxtaF1K-s7PaoOLMtk0nCFJmvZJ4pnwTPm5g-wTQ/s640/blogger-image--1410794451.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">We got Saoirse a new car seat for the van to see if she just hates car seats in general or if it's just her bucket seat (which she still fits in quite well). Well, turns out she hates car seats, but she hates her bucket (a Chicco Keyfit 30) more. Which is understandable as it is far less padded than the new S1 we got her, after I did much research. Overall, I am happy with the new purchase. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I'm going to break this down into pros and cons.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Pros: very well padded, looks comfy, the only valid 3-in-1 convertible seat, pretty easy to install if you follow the manual, the cup holder seems like it would actually be validly usable for a child if they have, ya know, arms long enough to need a cup holder. Goes rear facing to 40 lbs. Harness forward facing to 70 lbs. High back booster til 100 lbs. No rethread harness and head rest moves with one hand (which adjusts the harness as well.) Very nice air head pads. 2 cup holders. Steel reinforced. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Cons: it is big. Rear facing it takes up a lot of room back to front, so it wouldn't really be valid in smaller vehicles (we have a Dodge Grand Caravan). Wouldn't play well with other car seats as it is broad, but we have Captain's seats so that wasn't a concern for me. Joseph doesn't much care for the harness straps, but they don't bother me so that is a matter of opinion. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">It's pretty heavy, about 25 lbs, which is both a pro and a con. Under new regulations, LATCH shouldn't be used past when the child's weight + the car seat weight= 65 lbs. This seat rear faces to 40 lbs, so I shouldn't have to switch to using a seat belt til Saoirse is forward facing (which I don't plan to do until Saoirse is 40 lbs and is therefore too heavy to rear face in this seat).</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">As you can see in the above picture, I had to add a rolled up towel to get the appropriate recline on the seat, as the Grand Caravan has bizarrely slanted seats. She's definitely teething, per her swollen lower gum (as if the drooling and finger chewing weren't evidence enough). During the day, she will fight sleep like no one's business. It often requires walking, a car ride, or me lying down with her in our darkened room and nursing to get her to sleep. Not at all certain how that will work when I get a job, but other people seem to have an easier time getting her to sleep without a boob. </div><div><br></div><div>Which is good, since I'm the only one with functioning boobs. </div><div><br></div><div>I'm thrilled that she has only been fed breastmilk since she was born. She's had a few bottles of pumped milk without any problems, but no formula. I'm very proud of myself for that. I didn't leave her with someone else for long enough for her to need a bottle until she was almost 3 months old. </div><div><br></div><div>She definitely prefers it straight from the boob though. We had a bottle that still had half an ounce or so in it when I got home from Pure Barre and, given the status of liquid gold that breastmilk has, I kinda wanted her to finish it. She refused, just kinda chewed on the nipple for a few minutes before fussing and demanding it straight from the tap, so to speak. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhwALNlWw-SMzk9RF7_RgTMQauGI3ZmVpqsgjeRGtU_HJBsQdmTKs777z1nNdKoc1-WLEIL8Vk_EbFD4kVaPhNTeYdE93NQViQp3u4QohUtZtJNruxFXfjkb9Eb14m3JCPgELzHsgL0A/s640/blogger-image--1152107692.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhwALNlWw-SMzk9RF7_RgTMQauGI3ZmVpqsgjeRGtU_HJBsQdmTKs777z1nNdKoc1-WLEIL8Vk_EbFD4kVaPhNTeYdE93NQViQp3u4QohUtZtJNruxFXfjkb9Eb14m3JCPgELzHsgL0A/s640/blogger-image--1152107692.jpg"></a></div>I'm quite proud of these little rolls. She has hand dimples and arm and tummy rolls and thunder thighs. She's definitely a fan of the boob. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPKX9Go7hWrjeh6v4Nm5hXLLe1ZdDaXotLVGPBE71vm2lvpcuDTXbRgYHGdECE8DD4624uXFvMcdZzg86j7UIlWUNoILJq_q0ovNUinju6qMpwGkThraKtSvrjSLsbTxdcbY9penYfIA/s640/blogger-image--635136979.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPKX9Go7hWrjeh6v4Nm5hXLLe1ZdDaXotLVGPBE71vm2lvpcuDTXbRgYHGdECE8DD4624uXFvMcdZzg86j7UIlWUNoILJq_q0ovNUinju6qMpwGkThraKtSvrjSLsbTxdcbY9penYfIA/s640/blogger-image--635136979.jpg"></a></div>She's also quite good at sitting in her Bumbo. She's been able to roll from tummy to back since she was about 2 months old (oct 28), but she seems really uninterested in going from back to front. She prefers her back to her tummy, so it's not high on her list of priorities. She giggled, definitely giggled, on Jan 16. It was adorable. She likes to stand up (with support obviously), and has started "high stepping" as my mom calls it. It's cute. She will definitely have me beat for amount of hair by age 1. I was nearly bald, so it wouldn't take much, but she has way more hair regardless. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq4KoXbsiVkp3VYgjzExjebbuXQAzxOkd7k8pHhDMc5xw21GT0s_6wMTtA9auZGOyzzKLKrWA8fvOZNvNgJBJ1IPIXnwBb622lJOdrq-RiDqcg5uySt_H4Mm0tqf9EOYK7CpNBfcvTNw/s640/blogger-image-35033256.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq4KoXbsiVkp3VYgjzExjebbuXQAzxOkd7k8pHhDMc5xw21GT0s_6wMTtA9auZGOyzzKLKrWA8fvOZNvNgJBJ1IPIXnwBb622lJOdrq-RiDqcg5uySt_H4Mm0tqf9EOYK7CpNBfcvTNw/s640/blogger-image-35033256.jpg"></a></div>Baby Faux-hawk</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFdLQFsrULX5FxCYmTcick_yo_acYHxxC2D4NYxlsFYAFoiH6MjXfW-dNad3xv05DZgh2ah4LLNdQBv2-Le03xStbIz2uTO4YZPvQYjhyhJvMnJiSI7mfSswUOwjgQQBDohlvf1Wc11w/s640/blogger-image-1147328078.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFdLQFsrULX5FxCYmTcick_yo_acYHxxC2D4NYxlsFYAFoiH6MjXfW-dNad3xv05DZgh2ah4LLNdQBv2-Le03xStbIz2uTO4YZPvQYjhyhJvMnJiSI7mfSswUOwjgQQBDohlvf1Wc11w/s640/blogger-image-1147328078.jpg"></a></div><br></div>Monicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13670394248188915457noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19145174592592656.post-43200078065743386492014-01-09T12:28:00.001-08:002014-01-11T15:11:54.378-08:00Pure Barre ReviewPure Barre is one of those workout things that I had never heard of until a friend of mine posted about on Facebook. Advertised as "high intensity, low impact", I was intrigued. I have exercise induced asthma and it seems like everything that falls under exercise triggers it. Swimming in an indoor pool isn't as bad, but even that will hit it eventually. And feeling short of breath is not a feeling I relish. <div><br></div><div>I decided to give it a try nonetheless, after she said it probably wouldn't mess with my asthma. And after all, why turn down a free "try-me" class? I arranged for my mom to watch Saoirse while I took the opportunity to "lift, tone, and burn."</div><div><br></div><div>I was instructed to get a ball roughly the size of a cantaloupe, a set of 2 lb weights, and a stretchy tube thing, and then I found a spot in the center-ish area of the floor, as was suggested by the instructor. </div><div><br></div><div>First off let me say, I have no idea how these instructors keep sounding so perky through the whole thing. </div><div><br></div><div>We started off with knee lifts to warm up, some opposite knee to opposite elbow kind of stuff where it took me a good 5 tries to get my legs and arms working on a diagonal. For someone who has a dance background, I am amazingly awful at figuring out where my body is in space. Following that, we picked up our weights to work the shoulders and arms. I was at least mildly concerned for my rotator cuff, despite the fact they watch your form so you don't hurt yourself. However, courtesy of this, I now use my baby as a weight to the tune of "and lift, for two, and down, for two." Then there were planks, and push ups, and things that I don't know the name for. And I became intensely aware of how little upper body strength I have. Irish dance does not focus on upper body strength at all. As a result, my legs are strong, my core is decent, and my arms suck. </div><div><br></div><div>Finally, after what felt like it had to be at least halfway through class, the instructor says, "And that finishes our warm-up."</div><div><br></div><div>I nearly fell out in the floor right then and there. I'm not sure why this shocked me so much, considered we hadn't even approached the bar part of Pure Barre yet. My shoulders hurt. 2 lb weights get really heavy after about 5 minutes. </div><div><br></div><div>I'll leave some of this to the imagination as the "seat and thighs" section at the barre varies from week to week. Suffice to say, my butt hurt by the end of it. And my legs shook through most of it. </div><div><br></div><div>We finished up with ab work. And it definitely works the abs. I don't know that I have ever been so grateful to see my mom walking with Saoirse (them being back at Pure Barre meant class was nearly over). Holding my baby after class hurt. My shoulders were what I felt the class in first. Not surprising since my arms are my weakest area. </div><div><br></div><div>The next morning was when I felt every muscle. Coughing hurt. Getting out of bed hurt. I then went and bought a 5 classes for $51 Groupon and vowed to go once a week. It was such a workout. I've now been for 3 classes. Everyone I've talked to about it says how hard it is, especially that first class. And then they go back. And honestly, it keeps kicking your butt, at least best as I can tell. But I had to share this with everyone. </div><div><br></div><div>You can try out one class for free. There's a Groupon for new clients (5 classes for $51 or 10 for $90 ish- must be used within 30 or 45 days respectively). There's a New Mom special where you get 3 months unlimited for $390 or so. Which is less than the $480 or so for 3 months unlimited normally. It's expensive but it will whoop your butt into shape quickly if you go the 3-4 times a week that's recommended. I can only pull off 1 time a week right now due to having to have someone watch Saoirse, but 1x a week is better than nothing. </div><div><br></div><div>I definitely recommend this workout. </div><div><br></div><div><i>This review was not requested nor endorsed by Pure Barre or Pure Barre Little Rock. I got no payment or free goodies for this review. This is all my opinion and my money being spent. </i></div><div><br></div><div><br></div>Monicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13670394248188915457noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19145174592592656.post-32110047930366551672014-01-06T14:15:00.001-08:002014-01-06T14:15:01.252-08:00Some nights...I'm not sure what the heck is going on. Saoirse fusses and fusses and what seems like nothing sets her off. Last night, if it wasn't me holding her, it pretty much wasn't okay. She also refused to sleep for any length of time until 2 am. Fortunately, she was in a good mood. Cooing and crowing and chattering. <div><br></div><div>I'm not complaining, not really. Just showing it's not always rainbows and butterflies. Teething sucks. She's been drooling like a St Bernard since she was about 2 months old. </div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgt801-awtsPEEy88IEAweoBNrWfmfFkZrqLBEIdRRbpj_68Ig6kVAGx4-EjZo5BErcHCLrASyGuPT0zOWNTay2LUhIPjbhMXfr6gTxWohL4SrZH_Yu8P0b3uB7iVPm2ZoXgsFRlMegjQ/s640/blogger-image-1420607321.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgt801-awtsPEEy88IEAweoBNrWfmfFkZrqLBEIdRRbpj_68Ig6kVAGx4-EjZo5BErcHCLrASyGuPT0zOWNTay2LUhIPjbhMXfr6gTxWohL4SrZH_Yu8P0b3uB7iVPm2ZoXgsFRlMegjQ/s640/blogger-image-1420607321.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>Some days the only thing that soothes her is teething gel and teething rings or a finger. Her hands are constantly in her mouth. I'm waiting for that first tooth to break through, all the while realizing we're in this for the long haul regardless. I'm not looking forward to 2 year old molars. </div><div><br></div><div>But at the end of the day she's an awesome snuggle buddy and I love her to pieces. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDZzOjuRYXiELS2P_P-YQiN7hX80w7e-sFddktNMkRoBngGzp3EbKAGj_z4lwt5qpMl7ipE_a07uyqUqPgV1rNrRJ9kRL3_PxAqmTMcb65R0Aye4UyNayXytA0sT4du67kiMJTSwDcPw/s640/blogger-image--1995311802.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDZzOjuRYXiELS2P_P-YQiN7hX80w7e-sFddktNMkRoBngGzp3EbKAGj_z4lwt5qpMl7ipE_a07uyqUqPgV1rNrRJ9kRL3_PxAqmTMcb65R0Aye4UyNayXytA0sT4du67kiMJTSwDcPw/s640/blogger-image--1995311802.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOhMnECdhopKaEEwYruv19AOKvDkms4lyobHPOT2R43_5zJQZg4WdQIBs8EG10KjraZxlNtustGvG5JdVPRRXoMEL-pyEWzdr1vV3AyuiPKqQHZSfIXFq2oFe7qmpwF528u6aTeCuO_g/s640/blogger-image--1700259450.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOhMnECdhopKaEEwYruv19AOKvDkms4lyobHPOT2R43_5zJQZg4WdQIBs8EG10KjraZxlNtustGvG5JdVPRRXoMEL-pyEWzdr1vV3AyuiPKqQHZSfIXFq2oFe7qmpwF528u6aTeCuO_g/s640/blogger-image--1700259450.jpg"></a></div><br></div>Monicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13670394248188915457noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19145174592592656.post-28051617065152224772013-12-30T14:19:00.001-08:002013-12-30T14:19:28.900-08:00Christmas MorningSaoirse's first Christmas went well.
